Painters, illustrators, ceramicists and small design firms share buildings with rehearsal rooms, recording studios and independent printers.

Several quarters host open studio weekends, when visitors can walk between buildings and meet the people working inside.

Local investment, including support for affordable studio rents, has helped sustain the growth.
